How to help your team advance in their development

It might not be possible to plan an in-person meet-up, especially if your projects have short turnaround times. As a team leader, it is your job to make sure everyone feels seen and heard.

Set reminders for yourself to check in with team members, or send calendar events so that making updates is always top of mind and getting done. The main goal here is to keep the momentum going so that the project wraps up on time. Choose a project management software that lets you plan the entire project and assign deadlines and responsibilities so everyone can see what tasks need to be accomplished. During the Ending Stage, some team members may become less focussed on the team’s tasks and their productivity may drop. This is when the team is at optimal performance and is able to accomplish tasks quickly because members flow through the process. Performing is the stage when the team has come together as a group and is operating at a high level of efficiency and accomplishing the task it was charged with. Team leaders need to make sure that the stronger personalities don’t inadvertently dominate the team and its outcomes. All members should be actively participating before this stage is complete. For instance, a team leader may explain the duration of the project and the desired outcomes in this stage.

Later, during the norming and performing stages, norms focus on relationships and levels of performance. Performance norms are very important because they define the level of work effort and standards that determine the success of the team. As you might expect, leaders play an important part in establishing productive norms by acting as role models and by rewarding desired behaviors. It begins with a directing style, then to coaching and participation and in the finishing stage, the delegation stage (Bruce Tuckman’s 1965, n.d.). Tuckman’s model is an explanation and understanding of how a team develops. As well, it helps to train people in group work enabling them to accomplish their full potential (Bruce Tuckman’s 1965, n.d.).
